China visa photo: 33 x 48 mm and the online-form file

The Chinese visa rule is strict: paper photo 33 x 48 mm, head 28–33 mm from chin to crown, 3–5 mm from the top, white background; the online form (COVA) needs a JPEG of 354 x 472 to 420 x 560 px, 40–120 KB. Upload a front-facing photo, check the report, then download the paper photo or the online-form file.

    Common reasons for rejection

    Print it

Download the 4x6 print sheet and order it as a regular 4x6 in (10x15 cm) photo print at Walmart, Walgreens, CVS, Costco or any photo kiosk. A 4x6 print usually costs well under a dollar, versus about $15–17 for passport photos taken at a pharmacy counter. Ask for actual size, no cropping, no "fit", then cut along the gray lines.

    Frequently asked questions

What size is a China visa photo?

The paper photo is 33 mm wide by 48 mm high, with the head 28–33 mm tall. The digital file for the online form is a JPEG between 354 x 472 and 420 x 560 pixels, 40–120 KB.

Is a 2x2 inch photo OK for a Chinese visa?

No. 2x2 in (51 x 51 mm) is the US size. China asks for 33 x 48 mm with a larger head ratio, so make the photo in the China format.

Can I wear glasses in a China visa photo?

Only plain glasses without tinted lenses, glare or thick frames that hide the eyes. Taking them off is safer.

Do my ears need to show?

Yes. The rule asks for the whole face with ears visible and a neutral expression with the mouth closed.
